“In God we trust” is on all our money. How much would be different if it was not there? If you ask a lot of younger people what is a shepard-how many even know? Kind of asking to think of God as a father, the one that beat the snot out of my mom and me; or the one who was so busy with everything else that I seemed to be an afterthought; or the one who helped create me and then hit the road. Another disturbing question is God shown by your words or your life. There was a book called, “If Jesus came to my house”, and I wish that I could be home when it happened.

What would be a good replacement image for “shepherd” in our time and place?

Replacing the image of a “shepherd”, for me, is really difficult. Most of us like our time with Christ to be comfort; in control;and demanding only a very small part of our life. The idea of a “shepherd” that I see, is not someone hanging with a bunch of white fluffy (church members); singing “It is well in my soul”: praying for aunt or uncle with sickness (forgetting those walking outside the doors that will later ask -“Who was this Christ guy or sorry I never came in-cause no one invited me.” I think that what is needed now is for one person to become like Jesus; inside the church and outside; not worried about what others think of me-but only noticing the great amount of humanity that need Christ and maybe giving it to them-as a true reality; a true love; and at peace with in themselves to walk the talk. Joe, I wish that this was me but this is for someone that can be it to all people.
