Giving the Mic to Rev. Mike

Rev. Mike Curtis is a real life friend and Nazarene pastor. We served in the same town for five years. He’s an absolute gem! For example, and I share this here with his gracious permission —

Some of the secular training I received before going into the ministry has been a godsend. I worked at a plant that made IV pump machines. So … I went to the hospital to visit an elderly parishioner dying of a painful cancer. As I walked into his room I asked his son, Joe, how his father was doing.

He said, “Oh Pastor, he is in such pain … he has been moaning for hours.”

I said, “No kidding … has pain management been in yet?”

He said, “Yes, they put him on that morphine IV but it hasn’t helped”.

I said, “What?”

I walked over to see the contraption … yup … like the ones we made where I once worked. Hmm … the bag says good strong morphine. Then I looked at the elliptical roller mechanism that pushes the morphine through the IV tube into … Garlin’s arm. Well … guess what … the tubing was placed backwards under the roller. It was trying to pull fluid out of Garlin’s arm not into him.

I said nothing but scurried down to the nurses station to alert them.

The nurse at the desk pretty much blew me off as ignorant but the charge nurse happened to be near and heard us arguing. She came out and said, “Pardon me, sir, what is it?”

I told her and she told me the staff knows how to set them up.

I said, “Ma’am I used to build these things … I know how they are supposed to be rigged. It’s backwards. Come down and look at it.” So we headed down to look at it. The charge nurse stepped in … took one look and exclaimed, “Oh, my God!” … rushed over and reversed the tubing.

Immediately Garlin gave a strong sigh of relief, quit his trembling and totally relaxed.

The charge nurse was livid. She thanked me and bailed out of the room in a fit. I have a feeling some nurses felt some real heat that night or maybe even got fired.

Joe and Jean thought I hung the moon and stars. They were so relieved. They cried… we all hugged and thanked God!
