Two Candles

November 21, 2019

Before we move on from Gerhard Richter, here’s an oil painting of his from 1982 that’s in the Art Institute of Chicago —

It’s from a series called “Zwei Kerzen” or “Two Candles.” We have a photograph of it in our living room. (Yes, Patty’s very tolerant.)

It fascinates me for several reasons, not the least of which is its title, which is so simple and direct that it sounds like something a Methodist would do.

The “Two Candles” are side by side. One flame is leaning as if in a puff of wind, but the other is not.

Which says what to you? Please let me hear from you, any of the usual platforms, any of the usual ways.

I’d love to hear from you, and I’ll see you back here tomorrow.
