We Sang This at My Mom’s Funeral

June 2, 2018

I cannot commend this song to you strongly enough.

We sang this at my mom’s funeral in November because the melody is “a happy and peppy one,” as she’d say. The overall theme of the song is amazement at the grace of God, something she profoundly appreciated.

It’s one of the best tunes I’ve ever sung. The lyrics even contain a parenthetical statement, something seldom seen in songs.

And then there’s verse four. Resonates with my testimony. Or maybe my testimony especially resonates with verse four. Either way, the imagery of verse four is my story.

Several people at her funeral said they’d not heard it before. It’s in our United Methodist hymnal (page 363). The only reason I know it is that we sang it in Wilmore, Kentucky.

Great backstory to the song, found in this article —

Join me today in being thankful for all the ways we have to express our faith, including singing.

Sometimes through our tears.
