From Boston to Bethlehem to Right Where You Are

Today marks the anniversary of the death, in 1893, of Phllips Brooks, one of the most universally admired churchmen and preachers in American history.

Ironically, after graduating from Harvard, he was summarily fired from his first job at Boston Latin School. In his journal, he wrote, “I do not know what will become of me and I do not care much… I do not seem in the way to come to much now.”

He ultimately became rector of Trinity Church in Boston and ultimately, Bishop of Massachusetts. He was a passionate advocate of the abolition of slavery, preached Abraham Lincoln’s funeral, and is best know for writing “O Little Town of Bethlehem.”

Yeah, Phillips, you didn’t come to much, did you?
