Did God Really Say That?

September 3, 2014

“Did God really say that?”

Genesis 3:2 records that as the first question.

All the rest of that chapter comes from that question.

A case could be made that all the rest of Scripture, and so much more, springs from that one question.

This is not to say that we can’t have questions. We can. We do. The God who created us and loves us is also the God who says, “Come, let us reason together.” (Isaiah 1:18)

Nothing wrong with questions. The stumbling point comes in Genesis 3:4 when what God said is repudiated.

Today, let’s hear this quick dialogue as a screaming word of caution. Let’s make every effort to learn what God actually says. That’s the first step.

The second is to understand what God actually means by what God actually says.

The third step is for us to act accordingly. It starts with knowing what God says, and what those words mean.

If you’re like most of us, you learn and understand these best in the company of others. With whom will we be involved in Bible Study this week?

That’s my question for you and me: with whom will we be involved in Bible Study this week?  I’m getting together with friends this evening to start thinking together about “Questions in Search of Answers.”  And you?

See you back here tomorrow with the second question asked in the Bible.

Meanwhile, remember that it’s not just okay to ask questions like,, “Did God really say that?” — it’s imperative that we both know the answer and live accordingly.
