Only 2 Questions: A Church Goer’s Self Inventory

 “Are you a consumer or a contributor?” asks a friend and colleague named Steve in Indiana.

“Many people go to church with a consumer attitude. What can I get? Is it to my liking?  They rate the sermon, the music, etc.

“Others come to church to participate and to add by their voices in song, their positive attitude, their encouragement of others, and their enthusiasm about God, Christ, and the Spirit,” he clarifies.

Steve’s self inventory for church goers, Question #1: “Are you a consumer or a contributor?”  For now, it’s your call.

    I appreciate this question. Do you think it is possible to be both? I believe you definitely gain more as a contributor. However, I also believe there are times when we are weary, burdened, overwhelmed, etc. and may only be able to be a consumer. And, I believe that God welcomes both. Thank you for stimulating this reflection and Happy Sunday.

    I go because I know God is there and I always seem to find Him in something.
    Do you think it may be because I go with sense of expectation?
