Coach was Right
You set a banquet table before me
—Psalm 23:5
It was my freshman year of high school. The room was packed. The crowd was loud.
We were being honored at a sports banquet. We had made it through our first season of Cross Country. Parents were cheering for us and we were elbowing each other.
Coach Armstrong had told us the Awards Banquet would be fun. He was right. And this was even better than we’d imagined.
It didn’t matter to my friends and me that we were sharing the evening with the football team, or that our Junior Varsity awards were fairly small versions of the Varsity Letter.
What mattered was being with friends at a banquet in our honor.
You and I are invited to another banquet. The last book of the Bible, Revelation, with all of its mysteries and confusing things to argue over, is quite clear about several things. Among them is this, from Revelation 19:9: “Happy are those who have been invited to this banquet,” and that includes us.
Long before that invitation was given, Psalm 23 hinted at God’s hospitality as well: “You set a banquet table before me.”
Be on the lookout today for appetizers.
There is always something to feast on if we are just aware. As we say,”God is good all the time and all the time God is good.”

I wonder. Is a tree watching ride up the river road just as lovely with one person watching and driving?
