Practice Much?—1st in a 3 part series

September 7, 2012

Once upon a time, long ago and far away, I took private trumpet lessons.

One time stands out.  Painfully.

I flubbed the assigned music.  My teacher sat in silence during my several halting attempts to start over.  Not even coming to playing what was written, I slowly pulled my horn close to my chest as I folded my arms around it.

We both sat in silence, looking at the music on the stand in front of us.

He cleared his throat.

More silence.

Then I heard two words: “Practice much?”

That painful lesson comes back now and then.

And it usually has nothing to do with my trumpet.

See you back here tomorrow.

Do you suppose that God shakes his head at us with sadness and thinks.”I sure wish they would practice more. We could make such beautiful music together.” Praise to Him that He doesn’t give up on us because we fail to practice.

I was a terrible piano student. My teacher thought so too and sent me on errands to the corner store, etc. (my parents had no idea they were paying for that), I practiced, but when it is forced and you keep sneaking into the kitchen to adjust the timer your mother has set. Oops. There is a book by Women of Faith member Nicole Johnson entitled Fresh-brewed Life. One line stands out to me, when she talks about meditation or time alone with God and says, “I have fallen asleep on God more times than I can count.” I can totally relate to that. It is like my practicing the piano, I truly need to apply myself more and He is so patient with me!

I know that book, and will even admit that my copy’s highlighted with more than one shade of yellow..which tells you something about my re-reading it.

Always great reading your comments on here! Thank you again, Nanette!
