The Really Big Stuff at The End: Living Frank’s Prayer, Part 14 of 14.
“It is in dying that we are born to eternal life.”
Of all the paradoxical spins he’s already thrown at us in his prayer, our friend Frank outdoes himself with this last line.
And it’s about stuff that’s a big deal.
Not just stuff like Life and Death.
He has us praying precisely about Life and Death.
At least two layers are visible here.
One layer involves our inevitable physical death. As has been pointed out by saints for centuries, to live in the midst of time is only to participate in a parenthetical pause in our experience of eternity. As a church song says, “Both in our living and in our dying, we belong to God.”
The other layer echoes what Jesus said about finding, keeping and losing our lives. Luke 9:21-27 is pretty clear about it.
Check that out and I’ll see you back here soon, because we still have that last word. That four-letter word at the end of Frank’s Prayer.
