“Get Behind Me, Satan!”

Scott Gunn, an Episcopal priest, wrote this in a piece entitled God’s Ways are Not Our Ways, and it’s too good not to share with you. It’s based on Matthew 18:21-23, and a line that a choir member would turn and say to me and then laugh and hug me just before we processed into worship. Ready, set, go —

Peter gets it spectacularly wrong here, and Jesus rebukes him “Get behind me, Satan!”

This, of course, is the same Peter whom Jesus calls to lead the church.

Peter gets things wonderfully right in one breath and completely wrong in another.

I find this deeply comforting.
