I’m not a religious person, but this bronze sculpture was a revelation to me. From a distance, it looks like a lonely, homeless figure lying on a bench. But as you get closer, you notice that his feet are somehow deformed. |And suddenly you realize that those huge holes are the crucifixion wounds.
It’s a powerful image with a compelling message, but everyone can interpret it on their own terms.
When you’re in downtown Seattle, be sure to check it out. It’s on 2nd Ave., nearby a beautiful old church built in 1908. Sadly, I don’t know the artist’s name, but there’s probably a plaque somewhere on the wall behind the sculpture.
