I believe that there is so much power in learning how to spend time with ourselves.
The more time we spend in our own company, the more we can begin to get comfortable with the quiet. And over time, that quiet can become something nurturing, a place where we can actually hear our own voice above all the other voices telling us what we should be doing, making, thinking, wanting, or becoming.
This feels especially important in a world where we have a constant stream of information coming at us. Social media can be wonderful for connection and inspiration, but it can also make it very difficult to hear ourselves. I notice that in my own life. I try to spend more time with myself and my creative practice than I do consuming what everyone else is doing, although I certainly don’t always succeed. Sometimes the pull toward more input is incredibly strong.
But I also don’t want to romanticize being alone or sitting in silence. For some of us, quiet can actually feel uncomfortable or even triggering. Sometimes all that noise has served a purpose.
So I believe in being gentle with ourselves. We don’t have to suddenly become people who meditate for an hour or disappear into solitude. We can start with five minutes. We can make something, write something, take a walk, sit with a cup of tea, or simply notice what happens when we aren’t reaching for more input.
Little by little, we can learn what feels supportive. We can become more comfortable in our own company. And somewhere underneath all that noise, we may begin to recognize the voice that has been there all along.
Our own.
— All I can add is to remind you and me of Psalm 46:10. For a lot of us, and you’ll notice that’s first person plural, maybe you and I need to check in there right about now.
As always I look forward to hearing from you.
