My daughter tells me I am working just as hard as I did at Fox 2 News as an anchor Reporter before my retirement a year ago, We talk about every day, so I can truthfully say one of the significant changes is that I get to speak to my daughter more.
We get to have more extended conversations, and I get to talk to my granddaughter Rose too. Still, like I said, my daughter says I’ve gotten involved in more activities since work in TV. She is great because of who she is, and because she helps me with my social media and everything else.
i’m doing most of the content for my Facebook page of 192,000 followers. I’ve even hired a social media person to work with me on expanding to Instagram and the other platforms. It keeps me busy finding content.
My Daughter Ava points out problems or mistakes that I make, and gives me advice on some things to do and more importantly, on some things not to do.
I am also surprised that I’m doing more. So when I talk to people I meet on the streets, and they say how’s retirement going I always say I’m busier than before.
I think that’s because when I was working at the TV station, I would generally go out with a photographer to do one story and come back. Then I’d be in the studio in the building for the rest of the day or on weekends when I was anchoring, I was in the building on Saturday and Sunday.
Now I’m out all the time doing multiple stories talking to just a lot of people about various issues and setting up interviews to talk to people about a multitude of problems. So I find that a lot is going on that I want to cover that I want to spotlight.
Many people will reach out to me on social media at Elliott Davis TV with various issues, and I will try to get to them. So every day, I’m juggling multiple things, multiple balls in the air. But I can genuinely say that it keeps retirement fascinating;
it does not get dull. Does not lack things to do, and allows me to keep using my mind and also to keep staying active and relevant which I think is the most important thing to do in retirement.
When you look at many people who are active during their work life, they may have been managers or they may have had demanding jobs that kept them thinking all the time and active all the time.
Often when they retire they don’t get to use the brain power nearly as much as they used to. Even if I play a golf how many times could I play golf or travel? How many places can I go unless I’m Warren Buffet or somebody.
There’s a limit on that, so what I find is that the significant thing is to keep your brain engaged with the community and engaged with activities, especially if you were a person who were engaged in your work life.
Being involved and making decisions you find really that that’s what you could miss the most. my retirement has been a blessing, because God has blessed my retirement, and Jesus Christ leads me in my retirement so I never have a problem of a lack of things to do or a lack of being able to get involved and make a difference and help people.
I really am living my best life!
