At This Point, the Composer Died.
Johann Sebastian Bach died working on what many consider his greatest work.
Literally: he died while writing Contrapunctus 14 in The Art of Fugue. (From Strength to Strength, by Arthur C. Brooks, p. 38)
In midmeasure.
Years later, his son C. P. E. Bach wrote these words at that spot on that manuscript:
German: Uber dieser Fuge is der Verfasser gestorben.
English: At this point in the fuge, the composer died.
That’s stuck with me for some reason.
Not sure where to go with it.
Any ideas?
As always, I love hearing from you.
