How Seriously Do We Take Christ Jesus?

June 19, 2025

“Many try to take Jesus literally, when we are meant to take him seriously.”

That’s from page 112 of Adam Hamilton‘s delightful book a friend-and-colleague and I are reading through and discussing over coffee once a month. I commend it to you highly: Wrestling with Doubt, Finding Faith.

Yes, that “literally” vs. “seriously” line is ripped out of context. Blatantly so.

It comes from a section on how to read Scripture with an understanding of the use of metaphor and hyperbole.

In good United Methodist fashion, it’s even a call to action.

Again: “Many try to take Jesus literally, when we are meant to take him seriously.”

How serious are we?
