The Last Time He Went to That Church
From a recent text convo, shared with anonymity —
[A family member] was playing the lead role in [a play] in school and for the role grew his hair long and a beard. One Sunday after church one of the adults hollered out saying we don’t allow any of those long haired hippie freaks in our church — somebody hold him down and I’ll get a knife and cut that off.
That was the last time he went to that church.
— That happened decades ago.
This has happened since the pandemic —
We don’t have a dress code at our church. Why are you dressed like that? Don’t you know we don’t have a dress code here?!
— That happened to me.
