“This (snow day) decision will not stop the ministry of the church”

January 12, 2025

Wally Latham, friend from college and seminary both (Asbury and Candler respectively), articulates it so well —-

53 years ago I had to struggle with the decision to have worship or cancel worship due to weather. It was an agonizing decision then.

Then almost every year after that we were faced with a similar decision. Sometimes we got it right. Sometimes we just missed it.

No matter what we decided, some folks were very pleased and some were very displeased.

Early on in those 53 years to cancel a service had significant financial impact as almost all giving was by cash or check in the offering plate. Now that impact is greatly reduced since most giving is electronic.

This current snow day decision will be met with “good decision” or “what were you thinking?!?”

Based on available notifications churches made various decisions. Some decided to go on as normal. Some canceled. Some combined multiple services into one service.

Many who canceled due to weather are offering online worship. We never had that option during my years as a pastor. It does “soften” the impact of decision making.

Now, whatever your church leaders decided, whether you agree with it or not, be supportive.

Pray for those who had to make the decision.

Attend online, if possible.

Let’s get on with the work of the Kingdom.

This decision will not stop the ministry of the church.
