Roger Staubach, yup

September 2, 2024

Ask me sometime about the time I told Roger Staubach how to play volleyball.

Meanwhile, on this Labor Day and still very early in football season, this is from NFL Retro —-

Is Roger Staubach (Captain America) the greatest quarterback in the history of the Dallas Cowboys… Some argues that he is while others argue that it’s Troy Aikman… Staubach joined the Cowboys at the age of 27 years old as a rookie in 1969 and did not wind the starting quarterback job until his 3rd season in 1971. However, for 9 seasons in which he was the starting QB, Roger was clearly in command of the potent Cowboys attack. During this period, Dallas played six NFC Championship games, winning four of them, and he also scored victories in Super Bowl VI and Suoer Bowl XII..

At the size of 6-3, 200 lbs, Staubach ignited his career as a starter with an 83.4 passing rating, the best marked by an NFL passer of that era. His career chart shows, 1,685 completions in 2,958 passing attempts, which was good for 22,700 yards and 153 touchdowns.. Making Roger extremely dangerous was his ability to scramble out of trouble – his 410 career rushes netted him, 2,264 yards for a 5.5 yards average and 20 touchdowns. Staubach let the NFL in passing 4 times. He was also an All-NFC choice 5 times. He was also an All- NFC choice 5 times and selected to play in 6 pro-bowls.

Staubach first started as a quarterback at the U.S. Naval Academy, where he was a Heisman Trophy winner as a junior in 1963. Following his graduation, he spent a mandatory Fours Years on active duty, including services in Vietnam before he was able to turn to pro football.

Known as “Roger the Dodger” all he did as a junior quarterback was lead Navy to a ranking of second in the country and a berth in the college cotton bowl, where he set bowl records for pass completion (21 of 31) and yards passing (228).

An American hero and a legend of the game; Staubach has secured his place in history and continues to be recognized as an icon and an American hero.. Bottomline, he is indeed the greatest QB in the history of the Dallas Cowboys.
