Toxic Accessibility? Advice, part 4

June 20, 2024

Do you enjoy your days off?

Do you have days off?

Do you give yourself days off?

If you don’t, when will you?

“Everything, all the time” is not Scripture. It’s a line from an old song by the Eagles. I’s also become an unwritten but underlying mantra in many workplaces and homes.

Sadly, the Church is no exception.

And then along comes advice like this from “W. & T.” with whom we began this series back on Monday, thinking together about Willie and Trigger and Christ Jesus: When you knock on a door, be courteous in your greeting. If they welcome you, be gentle in your conversation. If they don’t welcome you, quietly withdraw. Don’t make a scene. Shrug your shoulders and be on your way. You can be sure that on Judgment Day they’ll be mighty sorry—but it’s no concern of yours now. Yup, Christ Jesus says all that in Matthew 10:12-15.

Our constantly-on-demand culture and His advice seem to be at odds.

Let’s roll this in Roll and see where it leaves us —  Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly. That’s what our Lord says in Matthew 11:28-30.

By the grace of God, may it — may He — leave us learning to recognized Toxic Accessibility in both ourselves and others.

And may that same grace of God lead us to health correctives.

Amen?
