Religion Can Be a Stick
Leonard Sweet is well-represented on my shelves and in my head and heart, precisely for what lies behind things like this from my notebook —
Religion can be a stick . . . .
a walking stick for the Jesus journey, even a white cane to guide steps when blinded by life
a hiking stick, carved with understanding and truth, worn smooth by missions and stories
chop sticks to eat with
hockey stick to exercise with
memory stick to learn and grow with
shift stick to gear into higher levels of holiness
fire stick to ignite imaginations and dreams
glowstick to signal dangers and see-in-the-dark
joy stick to simulate stories and adventures
shepherd’s stick (crooks) to guide and protect those in your care
a stick shtick to showcase your gifts
a broom stick to sweep around your own front door and clean out your life
OR, for too many these days,
a stick to beat, berate and belittle others with
and
a conductor’s stick, designed to draw out humanity’s finest melodies but too often judgmentally wielded to drum out an off-note or missed beat
— I got nothing to add…just respect and gratitude to convey.
