From a Friend with More Experience than I Have

December 31, 2023

Without attribution to protect anonymity, here’s part of what a friend wrote recently in this year’s Christmas Letter —

I am deeply concerned about the sinful state of our nation, the lack of thoughtful working together in our government, the seeming breakdown of democracy, people wanting big pay for a little work, and the decrease in church attendance.

The split in the United Methodist Church with false accusations about the spiritual values of the other group reminds me of Jesus and the Pharisees. As Christians we have a lot to be concerned and pray about.

I do not think this is just an old person looking at things.

—- I, Joe, also “do not think this is just an old person looking at things.

And then there’s this from the same person – – –

I have few relatives left. I have outlived most of them. With the role of leaving a church for the incoming pastor, I did not encourage long-term relationships. Now I miss long-term friends. I am grateful for new friends, but I miss the long-term memories to share.

—- Can’t we do better, Church?
