BONUS BLOG: “our first post-Christian generation”
Jim Palmer, former mega-church pastor and much more, makes these significant observations —
Let’s pause for a moment and be mindful that middle-aged white progressive Christians may not totally or naturally get the spiritual landscape of Generation Z. Born between 1999 and 2015, Gen Z is the first truly “post-Christian” generation. They are not typically up for reinterpreting the Bible as a path forward.
More than any other generation before them, Gen Z does not assert a religious identity. The percentage of Gen Z that identifies as atheist is double that of the general U.S. population. For Gen Z, “atheist” is no longer a dirty word. The percentage of teens who identify as such is rapidly growing. In my work with Gen Z, they really aren’t all that concerned about whether God really commanded armies to commit genocide in the Old Testament, they are trying to figure out if life has meaning and worth living.
