The L Word
Most of those fourteen “Love one another” Bible verses are attributed to St. John, in both his version of the Gospel and some letters.
A story about him may be apocryphal, or it might have originally been about someone who admired St. John. Nevertheless, it’s still one of my favorites told by a New Testament professor who told a lot of great stories. —
St. John was said to have sometimes been asked to address Christians.
Over time, these homilies became shorter. Along the lines of, “Fellow followers of Christ Jesus, love one another.”
Eventually he would just say three words: “Love one another.”
The time came he could only utter one word: “Love.”
— I have no plans to get out of ministry any time soon, but if I could choose just one word as my final sermon, I’d sure want to echo that one: “Love.”
