God in Schools or Not?

April 27, 2018

Gary Cox is a long time real life friend who’s a teacher, church choir director, actor, director of stage plays, and on and on goes the list. You’d love him!

He recently wrote this and graciously gave me permission to share it with you here. —

I keep seeing posts that say we need to put God back in schools. They make me wonder 1) who has a God that is so small he would leave a school because people told him to….2) And whose interpretation of God do you want in the school? Probably not mine. 3) God is there. If you don’t recognize that perhaps you need to evaluate your thinking. I’m preaching.

Preach on, Gary, anytime!

This is exactly what one of my favorite seminary professors was getting at, too, when pointing out the irony of us calling an Opening Prayer an Invocation, “as if The God of The All Creation was eagerly waiting for an invitation from us to show up to our event.”

And from somewhere over in the corner comes a cough. It’s St. Augustine, reminding us that “God is God, and we are not.”

Finally, “Where can I possibly go to hide from you, O God? Everywhere I run, you’re already there!” sings Psalm 139.
