Leadership & That Other Option
Stacy Hickerson Hord has graciously given me permission to share this with you —
Since I work in a seminary I am privy to some pretty awesome teaching. One teacher lately made reference to the “leadership cult” that has pervaded our churches. And I must say, I’m seeing what he means.
Everyone wants to be a “leader.”
They talk about being in “leadership” going to “leadership retreats” hanging out with the “leadership team” blah, blah, blah. I have to ask: what has happened to servanthood?
Why don’t we brag about hanging out with a bunch of other servants, or about being on the Servant’s Teams?
Is it just me or do we seem more concerned with the status of leading than the humility of serving?
— Leadership and Servanthood. Stacy and Jesus. The day after Palm Sunday and the start of Holy Week.
“The greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who leads like the one who serves.” (Luke 22:26)
That’s what Jesus said.
