When a Five Year Old Prays

January 26, 2017

It is with the gracious permission of Jamie Issacs that I share this —

[Our five year old] melted my heart tonight. I was praying with the kids and we were saying thank yous. [He] said “Thank you for God so loved the world.” He was quoting the Bible verse from Sunday school that they’ve been learning this month.

— Melted my heart, too.

And it’s a good reminder that they absorb more than we know!

Amen to the absorption!! When my brother died, I had to figure out a way to tell my soon to be four-year-old daughter that her favorite uncle was gone. He had lived with us the summer before he died and she was attached as I was. I had been gone so she was at the sitter and I picked her up and took her to the park in Lebanon (IL where we were living at the time). I had been crying for the entire three hours since my dad showed up at my door to tell me. She quit her twirling and came to my lap. I asked her if she knew what happened to people when they die (may not have started that way if I hadn’t had her in Sunday school since infancy). She stood up and looked at me and said, “Mommy, Jesus comes and gets them and takes them to heaven and leaves us to put the body away.” Remember, she wasn’t four yet. My jaw dropped and I must have been mute. She asked me why I ‘needed’ to know. I told her I wanted to make sure she knew “since Jesus came and got Uncle Stevie last night.”

    Absorption!
