Their First Time

June 12, 2016

“This is probably the first time many of these have ever been recognized by the Conference,” she said, “for anything.”

We were sitting on stage three days ago at Annual Conference because our Clergy Band was playing throughout the Service to Celebrate the Retiring Class of Pastors.

Annelle Ruemmler, our keyboard player, who has graciously given me permission to share this with you, was seated to my left. As I turned to look at her and formulate a response to her observation about our colleagues who are retiring this year, my heart broke. She was right.

These were pastors who had served churches faithfully, some as many as 43 years. With all due respect, some had been in towns and churches you’ve never heard of. Some were second career clergy, some were part-time pastors, but all served their Lord, their people, and their communities to the best of their abilities. And beyond.

“This is probably the first time many of these have ever been recognized by the Conference for anything.”

Today or this week, let’s find a way to let someone who otherwise gets overlooked know that we notice and appreciate them.

Deal?

See you back here tomorrow.
