How’d They Get In?
“A thief is only there
to steal and kill and destroy,”
he said.
“I came so they can have
real and eternal life,
more and better life
than they ever dreamed of.”
— John 10:10, The Message Version
Many of us love the promise of John 10:10.
To set it up, Jesus told a story that began this way —
If a person climbs over or through the fence of a sheep pen instead of going through the gate, you know he’s up to no good—a sheep rustler!
You and I might not be shepherds, but we sure know what a rustler does.
And we have such thieves sneaking around our hearts and minds today, looking to steal and kill and destroy.
I can recognize and even name several in mine today, but the worst part is this: I let them in.
How about you?
Oh, how true. We should choose our friends wisely.

If I am too careful, I am alone and I have been burned on many occasion. I worry about having become paranoid or judgmental. I don’t want to be either.

Rereading this a joke from someone’s sermon (definitely a Methodist minister in my past somewhere). There was a newcomer to heaven and St. Peter was giving him a tour. They walked passed a group of Methodists, all were joyful and rejoicing to be in heaven; next was a group of Baptists and they too were joyful and rejoicing to be in heaven. On and on, but they passed a group that were just whispering to themselves and pointing at different others in other groups. The newcomer leaned into St. Peter’s ear and said who are those. He said, “Never you mind, there just the ones who thought they were going to be the only ones here.
