And We Are Not
There’s a legendary story of someone trying to draw John Wesley, educated pastor credited with founding the Methodist movement, into an argument. It was a brief dialogue.
Mr. Wesley, God don’t need none o’ your fancy book-larnin!
Sir, neither does God need your narrow-minded ignorance, but what is your point?
Wesley turned it into a quick reminder of what is classically called The Self-Sufficiency of God.
Or as Steven Curtis Chapman writes in a song, referencing a line attributed to St. Augustine among others, “God is God and I am not.”
Sometimes some of us need reminding.
