The Lord is My Crossing Guard: A Psalm

January 16, 2015

Yesterday Pastor Leanne and I were honored to lead the memorial service and celebration of the life of John Edward Kingery, Jr.  At age 85, John was perhaps best known for his work in his most recent job.  For the past 15 years he was a well-loved School Crossing Guard.

As part of my homily, I wrote this version of Psalm 23.  Several people have asked for copies; happy to share —

The Lord is my Crossing Guard, I shall fear no traffic.

He makes me to wait on the curb; he signals me when it’s time to go.

He gets me moving, and leads me between the yellow lines for safety’s sake.

Yes, even though there are times when the street is filled with cars and trucks and buses, I will fear no driver, for You, my Crossing Guard, You are with me.  Your Stop Sign and Your vest, they comfort me.

You have prepared the way for me in the presence of the biggest traffic mess ever; you smile and you greet me; like You, I smile and I greet my family and friends.

Surely safety and friendliness will be a part of this and every day,  and I will make it safely back home where I belong.

By the grace of God, may that be our Psalm as well.
