Prayer Request, People: Sadly, an extra entry today.

I don’t use my blog to do this often, but here’s a prayer request.  A colleague in Georgia took his own life yesterday.  Here’s a prayer request from a close personal pastor friend in Georgia —

Please pray for this family, Church and our annual conference as we deal with this great tragedy and so many who face the demon of depression.

From Dr. D.B. Shelnutt., Jr., Senior Pastor "It is with profound sadness that I inform you that Rev. Christopher Carlton lost his battle with depression yesterday by taking his life. The funeral will be at JCUMC on Saturday, January 10, 2015, 11:00 am. Tomorrow at 10:00 David Smith, head of Summit Counseling will be here in the sanctuary to bring insight and comfort as a congregation. I encourage all youth and adults to be here. Please keep Christopher’s family (Debbie and his daughters Sophia 8, and Phoebe 6) in your prayers." In the faith, Dee
Joe here again.  That’s our deceased colleague and his family in the picture.  Here’s the official release as of this morning —

Joe again.  I covet your prayers for Christopher’s family and friends, and for all who know depression first-hand.  You and I have no idea who staggers among us carrying this weight.

Yes, every group we could name has people dealing with depression.  But I know about pastors.  And I know we have way too many pastors burdened like Christopher was.  And we have way too many pastors afraid, unwilling or unable to admit and address this.

Please pray for Rev. Carlton’s family and friends, and for all who battle depression. Mercy.

How right you are. It is so important that we are in Covenant with one or two other clergy – to share, to seek help and when needs listen to their suggestions to seek outside help. Coming from me, one who always want to fix things myself, it is important not to be lone rangers in ministry. After all, there were 12 disciples, weren’t there?

Prayers going up for this family and the church/community, as well as all of my colleagues in IGRC.
