Quincy Jones: You Need AND
He’s a trumpet player who has produced music as varied as Frank Sinatra and Michael Jackson. He’s won 27 Grammy awards. He’s Quincy Jones.
According to the November 3rd edition of The New Yorker, Quincy Jones was recently hanging out in New York City in a hall owned by Musicians Union Local 802.
The 81 year old Q, as his friends call him, said “God gives you the right brain, everyone’s got emotion, but you gotta practice, you gotta put the left brain work in.”
Sounds like every band director, orchestra conductor, and music teacher we’ve ever heard, right?
“You need musicality and discipline,” Q concluded.
As always, the escalator is out of order so we gotta take the steps.
“Concentrate on doing your best for God,” St. Paul wrote in 2nd Timothy 1:15, “work you won’t be ashamed of.”
To use common church language, we need both head and heart involved in our faith. One without the other is embarrassing at least and dangerous at worst.
