Beyond “Normal Boy Marries Oblong Girl”
Phew! Friday!
Many of us could use a smile at something amusing. If I were trying to be something I’m not, I’d call this A Friday Funny.
My dad was from a small town in Central Illinois, and loved to tell about a famous headline from his old neighborhood.
I’m sure you know the story: a man from the town actually named Normal married a woman from the town really named Oblong. When the locals read the headline in the paper, they saw nothing funny in it: “Normal Boy Marries Oblong Girl.”
My dad loved telling that, and said people not from the area found it hilarious.
Friend Jedd Price shared this recently, and it’s right up there with my dad’s favorite headline:
When Michael Foot was put in charge
of a Nuclear Disarmament Committee,
the Times headline read,
“Foot Heads Arms Body.”
See you back here tomorrow.
Joe, you reminded me of my childhood because I grew up in Normal and have not been normal since I left the town! LOL
