One More Slow Non-Masonic Degree
John Wesley wrote that “Every one, though born of God in an instant, yet undoubtedly grows by slow degrees.”
I’m really liking hearing about your own “slow degrees,” and thank you for your trust in sharing them with me.
Here’s another current one of mine. It’s from an online Advent retreat experience I’m involved in this year, based on a book by Pamela C. Hawkins, a colleague in Nashville. Her book is Behold! Cultivating Attentiveness in the Season of Advent.
In this third week of this Season of the Gospel, the retreat director asked this question: “How would you describe the shape of your faith to God?”
I thought it was a typo that should read something about “faith in God.” I finally realized it wasn’t, and that the question was about describing “the shape of your faith to God.”
Then I really stumbled around a while.
It’s a great question, and one I’d recommend to you today: “How would you describe the shape of your faith to God?”
Your answer is a prayer. Your answer is a starting point. Your answer is one of those ways God grows us “by slow degrees.”
And that’s good.
