The World is Ending, part 2 of 2.

November 15, 2013

You and I can find plenty of people to tell us when the world is ending.

Except, there IS this: But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.  Great line, right?  That’s Jesus, in Matthew 24:36.

Hmmmmmm.

And yet….

And yet a devotional guide I use regularly recently had this: “Metaphorically speaking, the world is always ending for someone.”

Whoa.

One of my favorite hymns has us singing that “this a day of new beginnings.”  But this is also a day of endings.

Today is.

Part of my graveside liturgy for quite some time has been an invitation “to pray for all who gather together today for the same reason we do, wherever they are.”

For some, the world is ending.

For some others, the world is falling apart.

Just before he said that nobody knows when the final day will dawn except One, Jesus said this: Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. (Matthew 24:35)

That’s a good place to begin when considering the end.
