Thank You: My 5 for Today
Yesterday I asked you for what five people or situations were you saying “Thank you.”
Here are my five for today:
1. Grace. I like to remind myself of the graciousness of God. Seems to me that everything else I enjoy flows from that source. I not only like to remind myself of that, I need to remind myself of that.
2. Life. This summer I found a shirt and hat that summarize a lot of my current theology. They’re a matching set. The hat has a picture and words up front where a team emblem would be. The cap reads, “Grateful I’m not dead.” The shirt has the same emblem and “Grateful I’m not dead” saying on the chest. Oh, and the t-shirt is of course black. Of course.
3. Family. — both immediate and extended. So much to say here, but I keep hitting “delete” because I get sappy and embarrassing real fast. Suffice it to say that as an adult who was raised as an only child, both designations are significant. As my cousin and I see an era soon coming when we’ll be the oldest ones in our family, these people become even more significant. (And yes, I include pets as family. If you’re an animal person, you already knew that.)
4. Work. Being a working pastor in a real church is a lot like every other job, profession and career with a variety of good times, bad times, and routine times. But I honestly wouldn’t trade places with anybody today. Sharing life with so many people at the level I get to on a regular basis is itself a blessing. Even though my summary word here is “Work,” it’s an inclusive word. And it includes you.
5. Coffee. I like to joke that it’s the only addiction I have left, but let’s not even start in that direction right now. Let “Coffee” symbolize a fresh start to a new day, a time of conversation and catching up, an invitation to pause, a basic component of life that’s ready to be flavored or enjoyed straight and for its own unique taste. Because it’s going to be all that and more as I move through this wonder-world called today.
Those are my five for today. And yours are…?
See you back here tomorrow.
