Keeping It Unreal: Fantasy Football and The Church, part 4

October 3, 2013

“Fantasy football looks a lot better than the fantasy of actual football,” writes Nate Jackson in Sports Illustrated‘s September 16, 2013 issue.

Fantasy Football: Roger Goodell is making the game safer.

Reality Football: You can’t hit without your head.  An no matter how many times you say the word ‘safe,’ football is not safe.”

And so —

Fantasy Church: I’m safe from harm, and it’s all about me anyway.

Reality Church: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'”  (Luke 10:27)  That’s being vulnerable.  And that can hurt.

But that’s also what we’re called to do and who we’re called to be.  And that can help.

Because that’s where Real Life is found.
