Keeping It Unreal: Fantasy Football and The Church, part 3
“Fantasy football looks a lot better than the fantasy of actual football,” writes Nate Jackson in Sports Illustrated‘s September 16, 2013 issue.
He compares the reality with the imagined. Being a former Denver Bronco, his observations are more informed than mine and maybe yours. For example,
“Fantasy Football:A player’s statistics are all that matter.
Reality Football: No one knows anyone’s stats, not even their own.”
In the Fantasy Church: I’ve been a pastor a while now, and I’ve heard things from colleagues like since their arrival the church’s attendance has doubled and the offering has tripled. I’ve had laity tell me that they can recall when over 300 met every week in the parsonage basement. The same basement with the dangerous stairs that have a turn and no handrail.
In the Real Church: you and I have a Savior and Lord who says that each individual is significant. For example, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” (Matthew 6:26)
Seems that individuals count when God counts.
