New Every Morning: A Prayer for All Day

June 25, 2013

New every morning is your love, great God of light,

and all day long you are working for good in the world.

Stir up in us desire to serve you,

to live peacefully with our neighbors,

and to devote each day to your Son,

our Savior, Jesus Christ the Lord.  Amen.

— page 878, The United Methodist Hymnal, current edition

He said, “When did we get these?”

She said, “Do you like them?”

“They’re great, but when did we get them?”

“They’ve been there all along,” she said.  “You really never noticed?”

When you and I turn to our favorite Bible passages, we’re probably not going to a book called Lamentations, but maybe we should.  The third chapter has this great line that’s quoted in the opening phrase of our Morning Prayer for All Day:

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
    for his compassions never fail.
They are new every morning.

“They’re great, but when did we get them?”

“They’ve been there all along,” she said.  “You really never noticed?”
