Who Goes First, You or Me?

June 3, 2013

Here is a trustworthy saying

 that deserves full acceptance:

Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners

–of whom I am the worst.

—1st Timothy 1:15, New International Version (©2011)

I can imagine St. Paul and John Wesley doing that Fist Bump thing.

John might have just finished telling Paul this:

In the evening I went very unwillingly to a society in Aldersgate Street,

where one was reading Luther’s preface to the Epistle to the Romans.

About a quarter before nine, while the leader was describing the change

which God works in the heart through faith in Christ,

I felt my heart strangely warmed.

felt I did trust in Christ alone for salvation;

and an assurance was given me that

He had taken away my sins, even mine,

and saved me from the law of sin and death.

 — from The Journal of John Wesley, May 24, 1738
Nodding in agreement, Paul might have replied, Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners –of whom I am the worst.
And…BOOM, that Fist Bump thing as they grinned at each other.
Then they turn and look at us.
Who goes first, you or me?
