It’s Not About Us

Worship, honor, power and blessing

Christ is worthy to receive;

loudest praises, without ceasing,

right it is for us to give.

Help, ye bright angelic spirits,

bring your sweetest, voices raise;

help us sing of Jesus’ merits,

help to chant Emmanuel’s praise!

— verse 4 of Hail, Thou Once Despised Jesus

Let’s be honest.

Let’s admit that we can complain about anything when it comes to worship: style, volume,  the songs being too complicated or too repetitious, etc.

Without much effort we find several excuses to not like what’s going on in a worship service.

But it’s not about us.

It’s about Christ.

It’s about Christ and us.

It’s about Christ, and us worshipping Christ.

This last verse of this Easter hymn makes that clear.

Oops.

Do we need to pause for reflection and confession?  Yes.

How shall we repent, what shall we change?

    Coming with the attitude that some how during the service we will feel God’s presence opens us to do just that. Maybe it will be the style of worship, the music, the sermon, the flowers or the lack there of. Maybe words from the children’s sermon or a comment from a friend or just the way the sunlight shines through the window. If we come with a come with a sense of expectancy, we will not be disappointed. God is GOOD!
