With a Mighty Triumph Over His Foes
“Death cannot keep its prey,
Jesus my Savior;
He tore the bars away,
Jesus my Lord!”
— verse 3 of Up from the Grave He Arose
With more than a little snarkiness, God says in the Old Testament, “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much.” (Job 38:4, New Living Translation)
This next song in our Easter series has some of that same sentiment behind it, especially in verse 3 and the chorus.
The resurrected Christ bursts forth like a superlative action film hero — Up from the grave He arose, with a mighty triumph o’er his foes; He arose a victor from the dark domain….
That same resurrected Christ, the one who tore the bars away, still wants to set us free today.
From what prison do you need to be set free? I know the name of mine. You know the name of yours.
Or what holding cell? I’ve spent way too much time in some, usually of my own making.
What are we waiting for? Are we really trying to work out our own plea bargain? And did you hear that chuckle right then? With more than a little snarkiness, God still says, “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much.”
God stands there with the bars torn away.
What are we waiting for?
