It’s Like These Two Girls
“The kingdom of heaven
is like yeast that a woman took
and mixed into a large amount of flour
until it worked all through the dough.” — Matthew 13:33
They snuck in, did what they’d come to do, and quietly left. They were an image of the Kingdom of God at work in society, just like some images Jesus used.
Here’s what happened yesterday at our third service of the weekend—
Our Handbell Choir was playing. These adult Bell Ringers, their tables, music stands, and the swinging of their many octaves of handbells, took up most of the front space of the sanctuary.
Two Acolytes, about ages 7 and 10, came slowly along a side aisle. Weaving among the Bell Ringers, onto and along the kneelers by the altar rail, these two girls carefully made their way to the altar table.
Those candles lighted, one acolyte continued in stealth mode to the pulpit and lighted the candle in front of it. The other acolyte stood waiting, patiently alert as if on guard duty.
Tasks completed, with nimble footwork they went back they way they’d come.
The kingdom of heaven is like those two acolytes bringing light in the midst of everything else.
