Getting Ready for The Second Coming
Some people are announcing Christ’s imminent return.
By contrast, Jesus the Christ says in Matthew 24:36 that “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. ”
One of my favorite stories about John Wesley addresses this. (Wesley was a priest in the Church of England in the 1700’s, responsible for the organization of what we know now as The United Methodist Church.)
Someone asked Wesley what he’d do if he knew Jesus would return tomorrow afternoon.
“I plan to get up at 4am, pray and study my Bible until 6,” he began. “Then I’m having breakfast with a family who has invited me to their —-” and Mr. Wesley was interrupted.
“No, wait! I don’t think you understood my question. What would you do tomorrow, if you knew Jesus is going to return tomorrow afternoon, Mr. Wesley?”
The reply came with a smile. “I don’t think you understood my answer. I would do exactly what I’m planning to do already. We’re to live in such a way as to always be ready to meet Him.”
