All That Oil
You anoint my head with oil —Psalm 23:5
Anointing of someone’s head happened in a variety of situations back then and there.
For example…
…sometimes it was a way to show honor and welcome to a guest.
…sometimes it was to demonstrate a fresh commitment to God.
…sometimes it was a way to recognize someone for an upcoming special task.
…sometimes it was for healing, both as a symbol and as a literal ointment.
…sometimes it was for the coronation of royalty.
And since this is our Shepherd Psalm, let’s not forget that shepherds used oil to protect their sheep, most frequently from flies and infections around the animal’s face in general and nose in particular. They would anoint their sheep to keep them safe and healthy.
Weave all of those together and you begin to approach how our Good Shepherd cares for us: “You anoint my head with oil.”
You’re worth it. Remember that today.
Thank you for the reminder. Remember you are too!
