We Are Not the Reason

October 6, 2012

After our quick visits with Ken Page and his mom here, let’s go back to our Psalm and pick up where we stopped.

The rest and refreshment it says God gives us are ours for a reason.

Of course.

But contrary to our current culture, Psalm 23 says we are not that reason.

Say what?

Many of us learned the phrase “For His name’s sake” from the King James Bible.  When reading this Psalm at funerals, I have tweaked it to be “For God’s own name’s sake.”

Two more recent versions render that same line this way:

“…for the sake of his good name.”  —Psalm 23:3, Common English Bible

“True to your word…” —Psalm 23:3, The Message

We enjoy these good gifts because of The Giver.

We are not the reason Psalm 23 can promise us so much.

God is.
