This is The Day, #4 in a series of 7

July 19, 2012

“This is the day the Lord has made,

let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

—Psalm 118:24

I could count.

I couldn’t count very high, but I could count.

I also knew the days of the week.

So when my Sunday School teacher said that at our church we believed that Jesus Christ was “crucifed, dead and buried, and on the third day he arose from the dead,” I did the math.

And I came up with 2 days: Saturday and Sunday.

Killed on a cross on Friday, okay.  Then dead and buried for one full day by Saturday afternoon, and then Sunday was Easter.

Only 2 days.  Not 3 days.  Mrs. McClealen was wrong!

So I asked about that.

“Because that’s not how we count birthdays,” I said.  “You know, you’re born, you live a year and then you have your first birthday.

“You’re one year old,” I went on.  “It’s your second birthday already, but it’s really only your first.  Is this like that?”

And I was told that back then and there, they started counting with the first day.  So it did add up to three days: Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The implication for you and me in all that is obvious: every day counts.

“This is the day the Lord has made.”

What are you doing to be sure that today counts?
