This is The Day, #3 in a series of 7

July 18, 2012

“This is the day the Lord has made,

let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

—Psalm 118:24

My mom and I were in Ft. Lauderdale.  I was maybe in third grade.

We needed to mail a package to someone back in Illinois.

At the Post Office, taped to the countertop, was a comic strip.

I read it out loud to my mother and the person working the counter: “It’s called the present because it’s a gift.”

From then until now, I haven’t found too much that can top that line when it comes to appreciating with awe the existential everyday-ness of what God gives us.

And what I’m afraid we so often take for granted.

Join me in remembering that this particular day, this very one right now when you’re reading this, is a gift.

This moment itself is a gift.

That’s why we call it The Present.
