Two Good Tools
Your rod and your staff, they protect me. — Psalm 23:4
A shepherd’s daily tools were used for both offense and defense.
The shepherd’s staff was used to nudge sheep along, pull a stray back, or even rescue one from a dangerous place.
The shepherd’s rod was used to ward off attackers.
The point for us is simple: God protects us in a variety of ways.
What are some ways God guided, rescued or protected you yesterday?
I wanted to pursue my own plans, and shrugged off a troublesome request with, “Not my problem!” But I kept getting nudges: You could try this! You could try that!
All my efforts seemed in vain. But in the end, they kept me in place long enough for someone with the solution to connect with me, so I could deliver it to the person with the problem.
Sometimes staying put is the toughest part of helping.

It is, Nina.
That curved part of the shepherd’s staff has held me even while I fought against it. Later, I realized it was keeping me from a cliff that was about two steps ahead of me.

Someone would have had me tackle things that would have set back my healing (already too long a process for me). Sadly (not for me), circumsttances kept me on a one-handed course. I can remember times fighting against that crook; can’t say I struggled much yesterday. I also remember being headstrong and “clever” enough to break free and dive right off that cliff, creating more work for The Shepherd,
